Intro: Leaders of the ten member nations of the Central European
Initiative have urged Serbia to intensify efforts to convince
Bosnian Serbs to accept the peace plan proposed in Geneva earlier
this month. As Peggy Polk reports from Rome, Bosnia's prime
minister said his country would back the plan as long as its
existing borders are recognized.
Text: The Central European Initiative began in 1989 to unite
NATO and former Warsaw Pact countries in an effort to ease ethnic
conflicts and promote regional cooperation.
Along with Italy, Austria, Poland, Hungary and the Czech and
Slovak Republics, member states include Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia
and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
At their annual summit in the Italian port city of Trieste near
the Slovenian border, leaders of the ten nations appealed to the
warring sides in Bosnia to accept the peace plan put forward in
Geneva July sixth by the five-power contact group and urged them
to end hostilities immediately.
The plan would award 51 per cent of Bosnia to a Moslem-Croat
confederation and 49 per cent to the Serbs, who presently control
70 per cent. The deadline for acceptance is next Tuesday.
Bosnian prime minister Haris Siladjzic said the peace plan is
not good for his country. But he said Bosnia intends to accept
it and to offer mutual recognition -- as long as existing Bosnian
borders are not violated. (Signed)
