CLEVELAND FREE-NET ! ! COMMUNITY COMPUTER SYSTEM ! !____________________________________! brought to you by Case Western Reserve University Community Telecomputing Laboratory ---------------------------------------- The NPTN/UPI News Center is brought to you by the National Public Telecomputing Network in conjunction with the Galaxy Telcomm Corpora- tion of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Each day Galaxy captures over 3000 news articles from their direct satellite link with UPI. Their reporters and editors then select the articles that would be of most interest to the general telecomputing public and makes them available by about 2 AM EST. At about 2:30 AM, NPTN links to Albuquerque, takes the Galaxy feed, processes the files, and redistributes them across its own network. Articles are presented daily in 12 different news categories. Four additional features are updated once a week. For the time being, the NPTN/UPI news service will operate on WEEKDAYS ONLY-- Monday through Friday. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THE FOLLOWING: 1. The Cleveland Free-Net is the test system for this new service. We will be experimenting with a variety of ways of presenting the information to you; so don't be surprised by changes, 2. In theory, we could get the morning news online by about 3 AM. That, however, assumes we have the process fully automated--which we don't. There aren't a lot of people lining up around here to get up at 3 AM every day to post the news. So... think of this as being a "morning" electronic newspaper--perhaps even a MID-morning electronic newspaper--until automation is complete. 3. You may download and print off these files for your own personal use, BUT YOU MAY NOT RE-POST, RE-DISTRIBUTE, OR RE-PRINT THEM IN ANY WAY. Galaxy Telcomm and UPI are commercial companies (to whom NPTN is paying serious money) and would take major exception to your doing so. 4. Speaking of cost... as you know, all services on the Free- Net--including this one--are free. That is not, however, the same thing as saying they cost nothing to produce or obtain. If you like this service and the others we provide, NPTN will be launching its Fall membership campaign in late September and you will be have the opportunity to support our work by becoming an NPTN member.
