HUNGARIAN SOCIALIST DEPUTIES ACCUSED OF CORRUPTION. The
leadership of the opposition Socialist Party on 9 August
announced it will refer the case of deputy Laszlo
Paszternak to the party's Ethics Committee, "Magyar
Hirlap" reported. Paszternak met the same day with the
leadership to explain the details of his purchase of a
plot of land in a holiday complex belonging to the Vasas
steel workers' trade union, of which he is chairman. The
plot was later transferred to his children, who built a
hotel on it. On 6 August, leaders of the Socialist Party
affiliated National Federation of Trade Unions (MSZOSZ)
demanded that both Paszternak and MSZOSZ chairman Laszlo
Sandor resign as deputies, both of whom they accused of
"unethical business dealings," Hungarian Television
reported. Sandor's name was included in the so-called
"Postbank VIP list" of politicians who received
preferential loans from that bank. MS

HUNGARIAN CABINET RELEASES ECONOMIC GROWTH FORECAST. The
government expects economic growth in 2000 to be 4-5 percent,
Hungarian media reported on 11 August. Inflation is expected
to be 6 percent and the budget deficit 2.5-3.5 percent of
GDP. MS

NOTORIOUS ANTI-SEMITIC FORGERY PUBLISHED IN HUNGARY. The
"Protocols of the Elder of Zion," a notorious anti-Semitic
forgery by the Russian Tsarist secret police, has gone on
sale in Hungary, AP reported on 10 August. This is the first
time that the book, which appears in Hungarian translation
and can be bought for 600 forints ($2.50), has been published
in Hungary since World War II. Lawyer Peter Feldmajer, a
prominent member of the Hungarian Jewish community, told the
daily "Nepszabadsag" that the publication is tantamount to
anti-Semitic incitement and must be banned. The Jewish
community in Nagykoeroes, central Hungary, has filed a
complaint with the Prosecutor-General's Office. A spokesman
for the Flex 95 publishing house, which has brought out the
book, told MTI that the book's publication is not aimed at
incitement but at "informing the public." Banning the book,
the company argues, would infringe on the freedoms of speech
and information. MS

SLOVAK COALITION LEADERS REJECT CABINET RESHUFFLE
DEMANDS. The leaders of the four-party coalition
government, meeting behind closed doors on 6 August,
said there will be "no major cabinet reshuffle" in the
near future, although "changes in individual
ministerial posts might take place," Reuters reported,
citing TASR. CTK said that the decision was endorsed
by Bela Bugar, chairman of the Hungarian Coalition
Party (SMK). The SMK has recently demanded a reshuffle
of Mikulas Dzurinda's cabinet. The four parties'
leaders also decided to prepare by 31 October a
"comprehensive evaluation of the fulfillment of the
government's program." They also rejected opposition
demands for early elections. MS

FORMER HUNGARIAN PREMIER URGES SOCIALISTS TO REFORM.
Miklos Nemeth, in an interview with Hungarian
Television on 6 August, said he has not yet decided
whether to return to politics but if he does so, he
will join only a "genuinely reformed" Hungarian
Socialist Party. Nemeth, who is deputy chairman of the
European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, has
met with former party colleagues during his vacation
in Hungary, and media have speculated that he is
considering a return to politics. He said that the
Socialist Party "has not yet reached the stage where
it can be described as a classic, Western-type social
democratic formation." MS
