**US, CEE LEADERS MEET**
Countries from central and eastern Europe renewed pledges
yesterday to support a planned NATO-led peacekeeping force for
Bosnia. U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry met with members
of the alliance's Partnership for Peace plan yesterday. He
says the 12 countries offered to send troops or lend
logistical support to the 60,000-strong NATO force. Perry says
he's confident that "we are going to have the force fully
subscribed, possibly over-subscribed." Even countries such as
Slovenia and Hungary, which feel they can't send troops to the
former Yugoslavia because they border the region have pledged
to send equipment and offered to make their territory
available for support operations. But Perry stresses that
countries participating in the multinational force won't
receive any financial help from the United States or NATO.
Perry also says non-NATO countries will be absorbed into the
alliance's command structure and won't be covered by a
parallel line of command similar to one created to allow
Russia to take part without its troops coming under alliance
orders.
**UNION HEAD BLASTS WAGE DROP**
The newly elected leader of Hungary's largest trade union
federation says his organization opposes the Socialist-led
government's plans to let real wages fall by four percent next
year. Laszlo Sandor was elected yesterday. He replaces
Sandor Nagy as president of the National Alliance of Hungarian
Trade Unions. He told a news conference yesterday his union
has a more realistic alternative policy than the government
does. Sandor says the federation is insisting that pay hikes
match inflation in 1996. Last March, the government launched
a strict austerity package to rein in Hungary's huge budget
and current account deficits. As a result, there was a
serious drop in real wages and a slump in the Socialists'
popularity. Opening the Parliamentary debate of the 1996
budget on Tuesday, Finance Minister Lajos Bokros said he
expects real wages to fall by a further four percent next
year.
