WASHINGTON -DJ- President Clinton announced today that the White House
conference on trade and investment prospects for U.S. firms with central and
Eastern Europe will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, on Jan. 12-13, 1995.
The conference was proposed by Clinton during his meetings with Central
European leaders earlier this year.
Commerce Secretary Ronald Brown will coordinate planning and implementation o
f
the conference.
Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Macedonia,
Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia will be
represented.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Following up President Clinton's visit to Europe this
year, the White House will convene a conference on trade and investment in
Central and Eastern Europe in Cleveland on Jan. 12-13.
Invited guests will include business leaders and government representatives
from the United States, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the
Czech Republic, Estonia, Macedonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania
,
Slovakia and Slovenia.
Clinton, who will participate in the conference, first proposed the meeting
when he met with Central European leaders in Prague, Riga and Warsaw earlier
this year.
"President Clinton witnessed firsthand the impressive progress made so far i
n
political and economic reforms in this dynamic region," press secretary Dee Dee
Myers said in a statement. "The president believes that through increased trade
and investment, the gains of 1989 can be made more secure and the benefits of
economic dynamism can be spread more widely to the peoples of that region."
The conference is designed to reduce obstacles to private investment and
trade, promote direct contacts with potential U.S. exporters and investors, and
identify the types of businesses in which increased commercial activity is most
likely.
