Intro: Slovak's authorites said Thursday they arrested four
Slovakians trying to smuggle enriched uranium into neighboring
Hungary. Stefan Bos reports from Budapest, the arrests were made
close at a Slovakian Hungarian crossing.
Text: The Slovakian National Police spokesman, Jaroslav
Pila,told reporters the operation was carried out in close
cooperation with the Hungarian Police.
Mr. Pila said four Slovakians, three men and one woman, were
arrested after uranium was found in their Russian car. They were
stopped in a village close to the Hungarian border.
Officials at the Slovakian ministry of interior say the smugglers
carried 750 grams of uranium 2-3-5 with them, which could be used
for making atomic weapons.
It was not immediately clear where the uranium originated from,
however it is beleived it might come from Russia. East Euopean
countries are often used as a supply route. (Signed)

title=NATO Meeting Ends (l)
byline=Barry Wood

Intro: NATO defense ministers have ended a two-day meeting in
Seville, Spain with a pledge to launch more effective air strikes
in response to Bosnian Serb provocations. V-o-A's Barry Wood
reports from Seville.
Text: NATO officials say ministers are united on the need for a
tougher response to future Bosnian Serb provocations. There is a
sense that NATO's two most recent air strikes -- including the
one last week -- were ineffective and insufficient. NATO
credibility, they say, will be restored by acting swiftly,
forcefully and with surprise against future attacks on United
Nations peacekeepers.
U-S defense secretary William Perry says the Bosnian Muslims
decision to defer the lifting of the arms embargo for another six
months offers a new opportunity to achieve peace in Bosnia.
// Perry act //
President (Alija) Izetbegovic's suggestion to delay the
lifting of the arms embargo for six months gives us all
a new opportunity to work harder for a peaceful
solution. We can take full advantage of that
opportunity only if NATO honors its commitment to apply
credible force.
// End act //
NATO officials will work out details of the tougher response to
the Bosnian Serbs at a meeting in Brussels next week. Both the
French and the British -- with peacekeeping troops on the ground
in Bosnia -- agreed to the pledge for tougher NATO action.
On other matters, the NATO defense ministers discussed procedures
for admitting new members to the alliance. Germany wants an
early decision to admit Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and
Slovakia, but opposes Russia becoming a member. No consensus on
who should join emerged here, and Mr. Perry said no decisions
on who should be allowed to become a member or when can be
expected soon.
However, the alliance agreed that full participation in the
partnership for peace plan, to which 20 countries now belong, is
an important criterion for future membership.
Defense secretary Perry says the ministers talked of refocusing
NATO toward looking South instead of just East.
// Perry 2nd act //
We launched discussions that will lead to a new NATO
focus on security issues along the Southern flank, from
Portugal and Spain to Greece and Turkey. As I said in
Madrid (earlier in the week), NATO needs to be looking
South.
// End act //
This type of informal meeting, says Mr. Perry, is a successful
one. Ministers have accepted his invitation to meet again
informally, in about 12 months' time in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Intro: Unofficial projections show that the "Movement for a
Democratic Slovakia" of former prime minister Vladimir Meciar is
leading in the Slovak parliamentary elections. But V-o-A's Alena
Kenclova reports from Prague that no single party has won a
majority.
Text: Early unofficial election results indicate Mr. Meciar's
party gained more than 30 percent of the vote, well ahead of a
left-wing alliance led by the reform communists, which won 12
percent.
The projections show another five parties are likely to get into
parliament. They include the coalition of parties representing
the ethnic Hungarian minority, the centrist "Democratic Union" of
prime minister Jozef Moravcik, and the right-wing "Christian
Democratic Movement."
The "Workers' Association of Slovakia," a far left grouping, and
the nationalistic "Slovak National Party" are also expected to
clear the five percent vote hurdle required to get into
parliament.
The election results are a success for Mr. Meciar who has been
ousted twice as prime minister by parliament because of political
differences. The leader of the ex-communist party of the
democratic left, Peter Weiss, believes the results enable a
coalition government to be formed without Mr. Meciar.
/// Unvoiced opt /// Tough bargaining is expected between the
main contestants. Observers say post-election negotiations
threaten to divide some of the parties. (Signed)
