I'm trying to assit a friend of mine, Todd Warger, in making a connection
with the European branches his family. His great-grandfather emigrated to
the US from the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1894. He's not sure what part
of the Empire his relative came from; the naturalization papers have
conflicting information on them.

He belives that the family name was Varga or Vargo. His
great-grandfather's birthplace is reported as Csepel on some papers, and
Circi on others. He can't locate either name on any maps -- although I've
determined that there's a Csepel Island south of Budapest.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Todd would also like to know what
resources/offices/archives there might be in the Czech or Slovak
Republics, or in Hungary, that might be able to assist him in his search.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, in the Ballard Backstage theatre (Market St. & 22nd NW corner)
on March 18, at 8 PM. Admission $14.50 in advance, $16 on the scene.

This is their 2nd Seattle appearance and judging from their success
from the first, this one should be even a greater one.
Be there if you can.

Hey Misi!

*Only in words*, huh? I lived in Belgium, on and off, for a few years
(in and around Tongeren, just north of Liege and west of Maastricht)
some time ago and can tell you that Flemings and Walloons sometimes
resort to fisticuffs, or worse!

BTW my reply to your e-mail (about *reserved tables* in blh) bounced
back undelivered. Is your e-mail address okay?

As I suspected. Yet the OMRI news item I commented on was mentioning
Flanders as an independent, sovereign country. On what basis, I don't
know.

+ - Etymology of the word "gazda", please ... (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

It came to my attention, that the Hungarian word "gazda" and all its
derivatives (gazdalkodik, gazdasag, etc.) are also used in Slovak.
Can somebody tell me the etymology of this word? Outside of Slovak, I
haven't seen it in other Slavic languages. Even the Czechs use the word
"safar" (safarkodik?) to describe the same thing. So I wonder if the
Slovaks took the word "gazda" from Hungarian. I have a feeling that it
may have an old Turkic origin though.

While at it, I also got curious about the etymology of "safar". It is
still used in Hungarian, but it sounds old-fashioned ("rosszul
safarkidott") now.

Thanks,

Alas, on the etymological history of the the two words you've mentioned,
I cannot comment. Gardonyi Geza in his Egri csillagok wrote: "... Torok
Balintnak deakja, safarja, hadnagya." As a youngster, growing up in the
countryside (on a tanya) of Szabolcs (Nyirseg) I used to hear "gazda"
used in its primary sense "paraszt". But in that sense it was applied, in
the first place, to the well-t-do, respaectable farmers. By the way, in
Serbo croation usage "gazda" means "boss, foreman". Since the word is
present in Slovakian and Serbo-Croation, we could conjecture that indeed
it is "magyar" and was borrowed by the "two neighbors". The third person
past-tense for "safarkodni" should be "safarkodott" instead of "rosszul
safirkodott". Yes, it sounds pretty old fashioned today. Although, just
before I left home, it was beginning to acquire a new and
derogative connotation, similar to "kupeckedik" (as if ugyeskedik,
seftenkedik, kereskedik, add-vesz, kupeckedik, were rolled into one word)
Sincerely, Laszlo Horvath
