My wife and I will be visiting Budapest from October 26th thru November
12th. We teach Hungarian folkdancing and plan to visit our favorite
tanchazok. We would like to rent a flat or a private room fairly close
to the center of town (ie: between Moskva ter and Keleti palyaudvar, and
between Arpad hid and Szabadsag hid) in the $15-20 USD range (yes we
know about Ibusz, Volantour, etc, from previous visits). If you know
anyone who would be interested in renting us a place please send email
to:

The evolution explained is well known by many people and I think that,
leaving aside the jokes, what some people tried to say is that :

ROMANIA is a "more appropriate" naming for two reasons:
- It is the official name commonly used in recent publications
- It shows more clearly the historical connection

The man intended to say that in "his opinion" the evidence of
Daco-Romanian continuity is such that denial would be ridiculous.
He probably has not seen your previous posts inspired so well from
Hungarian textbooks but having the arrival of Romanians in Transylvania
moved back a couple hundred years to make it look somewhat original (a
"fact" that still seem to escape Panonescu who keeps quoting you like
the Bible). You could answer him straight rather than act like a "Smart
Ass".

Is like your previous "argument" was not enough sarcasm, you smear
more shit on top of it.

Hi folks!

I am looking for a Hungarian students´ symphonic orchestra or choir somewhere
in Hungary (where else...). I am member of a German students´ symphonic
orchestra in Duesseldorf and we have recently been in Budapest in February. En
magam magyar szarmazasu vagyok so I manages that trip. But now we want to see
more of Hungary and so I look for an ensemble which likes to get in contact
with us.

Please E-mail me to (best would be in the
world´s most important language: Hungarian; otherwise English or German).

That´s it,

Erwin ;-)

You might not be exactly correct here. What was the
spelling used by boyar Neacsu of Cimpulung, most
certainly one of the educated Romanians of the 16th
century?

Tseara ruma~neasca~!!!

How about the famous Prof.Nae Ionescu? What was the
spelling stressed in the columns of his 1930s newspaper
"Cuvintul?"

Not Roma^n, but Ruma^n!!!

>let alone the conspicuous and undeniable roman origins
>of the Romanian nation.

Yes, but as far as linguistic is concerned "Romanian" is
derived from "romanus" via "ruma~n" and not the other way
around. The evolutionary path, as correctly as it can be
reconstructed, is

romanus-->ruma~n-->rumi^n-->roma^n

Therefore, none of the above spellings contradicts the
Latin roots of the Romanian language. As a matter of
fact, I'm not aware of any theory that denies the Latin
roots of Romanians.

>That said, the one true measure of the generally
>accepted spelling of any word is the way it shows in

Well, my search speaks the contrary (see Appendix). Let's
stress here that many of the authors that still use the
English spelling "Rumania" are Romanians, working
currently in Romania, or researchers from abroad highly
trained in matters concerning Romanian history and,
therefore, aware of many of the Romanian nationalistic
phobias.

Yeah, whatever... And the most categoric argument is the
spelling "Romania," isn't it? Anyhow I must have missed
something here. What is the connection between the Latin
origin of Romanian, the Holocaust, and the so-called
"Daco-Roman(ian)" theory? Not that I really care for an
answer, but I find your reasoning quite charming.

According to an ancient Chinese document, the Moon is
made up of green cheese. Denying this is like saying that
our Hungarian fellows are in no way related to Attila.

the first 3 minutes of use -- what you feel the rest of
the time is unbelievable.

The Euphoria Tape.

It was first whispered about on college campuses, and
only experimented with in seclusion, or among close
friends in private settings, but it has now become a
cult rush and is considered the next passion of our
Cyber lifestyles.

The Euphoria Tape.

Not a drug, not a chemical, but an audio stimulation of
brain centers controlling pleasure. And agony. And ecstacy.
The buzz. An audio mesmer signal strokes the base of the
mind, choking out pain sensations and producing the violent
flow of... euphoria.

The Euphoria Tape.

Copies have changed hands from friends to friends to other
friends. It is not regulated, there are no laws yet restricting
use of The Euphoria Tape.

The Euphoria Tape is rushing the masses.

Oh, yes. Mr. Angi's and Mr. Keeler's post are sooooooooooo intelligent, my puny
brain can hardly handle such lojik and nollij. Of course, this is in contrast
to the great stupidity of people like JELIKO and Matyas from the anon service,
who actually try to post sentences that make sense.

You might not be exactly correct here. What was the
spelling used by boyar Neacsu of Cimpulung, most
certainly one of the educated Romanians of the 16th
century?

Tseara ruma~neasca~!!!

How about the famous Prof.Nae Ionescu? What was the

Yes, but as far as linguistic is concerned "Romanian" is
derived from "romanus" via "ruma~n" and not the other way
around. The evolutionary path, as correctly as it can be
reconstructed, is

romanus-->ruma~n-->rumi^n-->roma^n

Therefore, none of the above spellings contradicts the
Latin roots of the Romanian language. As a matter of
fact, I'm not aware of any theory that denies the Latin
roots of Romanians.

Well, my search speaks the contrary (see Appendix). Let's
stress here that many of the authors that still use the
English spelling "Rumania" are Romanians, working
currently in Romania, or researchers from abroad highly
trained in matters concerning Romanian history and,
therefore, aware of many of the Romanian nationalistic
phobias.

Yeah, whatever... And the most categoric argument is the
spelling "Romania," isn't it? Anyhow I must have missed
something here. What is the connection between the Latin
origin of Romanian, the Holocaust, and the so-called
"Daco-Roman(ian)" theory? Not that I really care for an
answer, but I find your reasoning quite charming.

According to an ancient Chinese document, the Moon is
made up of green cheese. Denying this is like saying that
our Hungarian fellows are in no way related to Attila.

Nice try. Most people bearing those names come from Romanian families
with a Hungarian ancestor, not from Hungarian families. I have a friend,
Doru Chis, who is a very good example (he can't even tell who was the
Hungarian ancestor in his family).

This explains why you can find considerably more Szabo's, Kovacs's, Suto's
and Asztalos's than Sabau's, Covaci's, Suteu's and Astalos's.

BTW, I've read many times, in Romanian newspapers, that the real name of
Virgil Magureanu is Asztalos Imre (he's from Satu Mare). Is he of
Hungarian origin, or...

>while I the effect of claimed "Magyarization" between 1940-1944
>is not that visible.

It didn't last long enough :-) Most Romanians affected by that "claimed"
Magyarization have changed their names afterwards (even if this involved,
in some cases, court decisions).

The following article is shows the double standard of the Clinton
Administration.

While the Clinton administration uses it whole weight to recover stolen
Jewish property in Europe, it uses the same wight to force Palestinians to
accept the stealing of more of their property by Zionism.

here is a question for all those apologists for Zionism out there in internet
land. If jewish property is returned to its rightful owners, will you
return Palestinian property to its rightful owners the Palestinians? After
all, it was Jewish property stolen in Europe that was one of the main
excuses for stealing Palestinian property in Palestine.

ISRAELI and international Jewish organizations, supported by
President Clinton, have launched a campaign to recover Jewish communal
property seized by the Nazis in Eastern and Central Europe before 1945
and estimated to be worth more than Pounds 1 billion.

More than 14,000 properties, ranging from cemeteries to hospitals,
have been placed on a computer list in the Jerusalem headquarters of
the World Jewish Restitution Organization. Last week, Romania became
the first former member of the Soviet bloc to sign an official accord
for the restoration of communal properties once owned by Jews. The
campaign has been boosted by Mr Clinton's decision to appoint a
special envoy, Stuart Eizenstadt, to assist the operation, and by the
decision of the Swiss Bankers' Association to open an office to help
relatives of Nazi victims to recover cash in dormant accounts. So far,
Pounds 22 million has been found, but this has been described as ''the
tip of the iceberg''.

''In a few weeks we will be expanding our activities to cover
private properties seized from Jews. These include some 200,000 houses
in Poland alone,'' said Naphtalie Lavie, the former Israeli diplomat
masterminding the campaign. ''We will also be trying to secure the
return of priceless works of art from Moscow's Pushkin Museum and
elsewhere in Russia that were stolen from Jews by the Germans,'' Mr
Lavie said.

The pledge of support from the White House was made in a letter to
the Jewish Organization on September 8. Mr Clinton wrote: ''As the
democracies of Europe and America seek to build a new and better world for
the 21st century, we must confront, and, as best we can, right the terrible
injustices of the past.'' The President added: ''I know progress will
be neither easy nor simple. Restitution of Jewish and non- Jewish
property unjustly seized during more than 50 years of war, occupation
and dictatorship is a complex and emotional subject. Each country's
situation is different and solutions may take different forms. But it
is important to have begun.''

Among the 14,083 properties listed are orphanages, schools, old
people's homes, libraries, sports clubs, synagogues, rabbis'
residences, theaters and a building in the Polish town of Lodz
registered in 1906 as a ''Shelter for Battered Women''.

ROMANIAN EDUCATION LAW DISCUSSED IN BUDAPEST. A delegation from the
Hungarian Ministry of Culture and Education presented the Hungarian
parliament with its conclusions on the new Romanian education law, Radio
Bucharest reported on 2 October. The delegation, which paid a fact-
finding visit to Romania to study the effects of the law, concluded that
it gravely affected Romania's Hungarian minority. The report said that
the law hindered ethnic Hungarians from receiving vocational education
and created difficulties for Hungarian students seeking admission to
institutes of higher education in Romania. It added that in the long
run, the law may discourage the Hungarian minority from opting for
mother-tongue tuition at lower levels. -- Matyas Szabo

>Yes, up to the late 1950s, the generally accepted
>spelling was Rumania[...] It was even in line with the
>way many (less educated probably) Romanians have called
>themselves for centuries ("rumi^n" -- just think of some
>ballads and other such folklore).

Yes, but as far as linguistic is concerned "Romanian" is
derived from "romanus" via "ruma~n" and not the other way
around. The evolutionary path, as correctly as it can be
reconstructed, is

romanus-->ruma~n-->rumi^n-->roma^n

Therefore, none of the above spellings contradicts the
Latin roots of the Romanian language. As a matter of
fact, I'm not aware of any theory that denies the Latin
roots of Romanians.

>That said, the one true measure of the generally
>accepted spelling of any word is the way it shows in
>scholarly works, in news magazines, and in dailies. I
>can testify based on a great number of books ...
>agree on Romania as the correct spelling. In fact, a
>NEXIS search [...] never returned Rumania as a response.

Well, my search speaks the contrary (see Appendix). Let's
stress here that many of the authors that still use the
English spelling "Rumania" are Romanians, working
currently in Romania, or researchers from abroad highly
trained in matters concerning Romanian history and,
therefore, aware of many of the Romanian nationalistic
phobias.

>Finally, I am not willing (and honestly hope that nobody
>else is either) to embark upon fighting any argument
>that would assert that the Daco-Roman continuity is
>bogus. I think arguments in favour of that abound in
>such a fashion that denying said continuity is akin to
>saying that the Holocaust hasn't taken place.

Yeah, whatever... And the most categoric argument is the
spelling "Romania," isn't it? Anyhow I must have missed
something here. What is the connection between the Latin
origin of Romanian, the Holocaust, and the so-called
"Daco-Roman(ian)" theory? Not that I really care for an
answer, but I find your reasoning quite charming.

According to an ancient Chinese document, the Moon is
made up of green cheese. Denying this is like saying that
our Hungarian fellows are in no way related to Attila.
